Current residual flows
Arctic Paper (Grycksbo, Dalarna)
Arctic Paper is known for its production of high-quality fine paper, combining long-standing tradition with modern technology to meet the demands of both local and international markets for sustainably produced paper.
Slam
The particles and oxygen-consuming materials contained in the process wastewater are treated in the process wastewater treatment. The particles and biosludge, which are formed in the biological part, are mixed into a sludge which is the residual stream. This sludge consists of about 65-70% of smear, filler residues and 30-35% is biological material, fibers, etc. The material has a high density and low permeability (water permeability).
For example, sludge could be converted into biogas, biochar, used as a soil conditioner or used in the production of building materials, chemicals and other bio-based products.

Residual heat
Residual heat is the thermal energy generated as a by-product of industrial processes or energy production.
This energy could, for example, be reused for heating, generating electricity or district heating, or even in industrial drying processes.
SSAB (Borlänge, Dalarna)
SSAB is a leading global player in the steel industry, known for its advanced and sustainable production of high-strength steel, which plays a critical role in the development towards a more sustainable and efficient manufacturing industry.
Glow shell
Mill scale is a ferrous by-product consisting mostly of iron oxide. One type of incandescent shell falls into sedimentation basins. The other is released during backwashing of sand filters. Today they are recycled within the company's metallurgical plants.
For example, incandescent shells could be reused in steel production, road construction, land improvement, dye manufacturing, building materials, as filtration material or in environmental restoration projects.

Iron hydroxide sludge
Iron hydroxide sludge is generated from a Water Treatment Plant, which is a separate and closed water treatment plant for the hot rolling mill cooling line. It is dewatered for optimal handling. Today it is recycled in metallurgy.
Sludge offers opportunities for metal recycling, use in pigment production, soil improvement, cement production, waste management, as a resource in water treatment techniques or as a catalyst in chemical processes.

Slip mull
Grinding dust is produced during the grinding of rolls at the hot rolling mill and cold rolling mill. It is separated from the grinding fluid and bagged for recirculation in metallurgy.
For example, sanding dust could be recycled into new abrasive products, used in the manufacture of fire protection materials or technical ceramics products, used as an abrasive in industrial processes or explored for its potential use in 3D printing materials. There may also be opportunities in environmental remediation, road construction, soil improvement and material reinforcement.

Gevalia (Gävle)
Gevalia is famous for its long tradition of coffee production, where since 1853 they have been roasting and blending the highest quality coffee, making the brand a symbol of Swedish coffee culture and a valued export product worldwide.
Coffee bean shells
Coffee bean husk is the outer shell that encloses the coffee beans. When the coffee beans are processed, this shell is removed before the beans are roasted.
These could be used, for example, as biofuel or in soil improvement, the production of natural dyes or foodstuffs, as a detail in wooden floors, the manufacture of environmentally friendly packaging materials, the cultivation of mushrooms, or as a source of natural antioxidants in skincare products and cosmetics.
Mixing coffee/plastic packaging
Blending of waste coffee/plastic packaging from destroyed packaging in the process chain.
This residual stream could, for example, be used in the development of new composite materials, insulation materials or used in the creation of design objects. There may also be opportunities to develop a good separation process that allows recycling of plastic and waste coffee separately.
