Dalarna Science Park is now taking a concerted approach to the possibilities of digitalization in the region. As part of an expanded effort in the area, a feasibility study is now being launched to investigate how a regional AI hub can be established in Dalarna. The aim is to create a unifying environment that can help the region strengthen its competitiveness and increase expertise so that sustainable digitization can be driven over time.
The feasibility study is carried out on behalf of Borlänge Municipality, Falu Municipality and in collaboration with Region Dalarna, Dalarna University and EcoDataCenter and is financed with support from the public and private sectors.
- Digitization is no longer a choice, it is a prerequisite for being relevant, sustainable and competitive in today's society. With one of the world's most sustainable data centers in place in Dalarna, we have a unique opportunity to build something bigger, to gather expertise, develop new solutions and establish a hub for AI development and digital innovation here in the region. This is about giving companies and organizations the right conditions to grow with new technology," says Angelica Ekholm, CEO of Dalarna Science Park.
The feasibility study is one of several initiatives that Dalarna Science Park is running in the field of digitalization. In parallel, companies are also offered advice, seminars, workshops and networking to increase digital maturity so that they can more easily adapt to a changing market.
A recent Novus survey, commissioned by Dalarna Science Park, shows that 55 percent of 1,000 respondents in Dalarna aged 18-64 believe that AI will contribute to increased efficiency and productivity. At the same time, almost half say that a lack of knowledge is the biggest obstacle for companies to move forward.
- This initiative can be seen as a strategic investment in both skills and innovation. We see that the feasibility study will investigate our conditions and generate answers to how we create an attractive environment for future development and at the same time make Dalarna more interesting for investment, establishment and talent. This will strengthen our future prospects and contribute to long-term growth," said Erik Nises, Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board of Borlänge and Liza Lundberg, Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board of Falun in a joint statement.
EcoDataCenter, which is behind one of the world's most sustainable data centers, with an establishment in Falun and soon also Borlänge, is an important partner in the project.
- AI development requires access to computing power on a large scale. We strongly believe in Dalarna as a place where we can be at the forefront and create optimal conditions for sustainable growth throughout the AI value chain. From EcoDatacenter's side, we look forward to actively contributing to this work," says Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDatacenter
The feasibility study will run during the spring of 2025 and will result in a concrete proposal for how an AI hub can be organized and financed. The ambition is to create a long-term hub for digital development in Dalarna for both companies, society and future innovations.
