Dalarna knows what sustainability means

Sweden is well advanced in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, but we still need to speed up the transition to create a sustainable society. To do so, the business community has a
central role in the implementation.

It is therefore gratifying that our latest innovation panel shows that we in Dalarna do not see sustainability as a buzzword or that it is not just synonymous with climate and environmental issues. In the panel, where we asked questions about how people view sustainability, 77% answered that they believe that it is sustainability that creates the conditions for the future for people, company profitability and the planet as a whole. More than 50% also believe that development in Dalarna would come to a halt if active sustainability work is not carried out.

More than 70 percent of respondents said that organizations that do not currently prioritize sustainability work lack internal enthusiasts who drive the issues or that the knowledge of how to implement the work does not exist. At Dalarna Science Park, we believe that knowledge makes a difference. That is why we invest a lot of resources in training and developing companies in Dalarna in areas such as sustainability.

Within the business development program HIT, sustainable and innovative transition for growth, Dalarna Science Park offers companies support in their development work. In addition to tools and support in their business development, the program provides companies with ongoing guidance for further development and communication of their sustainability work.

The companies we work with also have the opportunity to use the "Sustainability Scale-up" tool, where companies can easily and pedagogically identify the sustainability areas that are relevant to them, identify areas for development and also formulate goals and concrete activities to move forward.

The tool was developed together with Vinnova and is now used throughout Sweden by several organizations. As the next step in the work, Dalarna Science Park is now collaborating with Vinnova and several actors to develop a common approach and measurement methods for sustainable business development.

The knowledge that sustainability can be measured is widespread, as the panel results show. Almost 75% say they know that it involves measuring several different parameters to ensure a reliable result. Only 2% of respondents believe that sustainability is not measurable.
