Sweden's AI Strategy Becomes a Reality Through a New Regional AI Hub

Sweden aims to be one of the world’s top ten AI nations. At the same time, billions are being invested in data centers and AI infrastructure across the country. In a short period of time, Dalarna has emerged as one of Sweden’s most interesting regions at the intersection of energy, data centers, and artificial intelligence.

Dalarna Science Park has now been granted funding to establish a regional AI hub designed to strengthen the ability of businesses and public organizations to use AI in a responsible and practical manner. The initiative aims to boost competitiveness in the business sector, contribute to sustainable AI development and data center operations, and create better conditions for putting national AI ambitions into practice.

Earlier this year, the government unveiled a new national AI strategy aimed at strengthening Sweden’s position as a leading AI nation. At the same time, several studies show that many companies still struggle to move from interest and experimentation to AI solutions that deliver real business value. This is where the new AI hub will serve as a bridge between ambition and implementation.

“AI development is key to a company’s competitiveness. We want to show how this technology can be used in the real world to boost efficiency, innovation, and sustainable transition. Dalarna will be the place where AI becomes a reality,” says Angelica Ekholm, CEO of Dalarna Science Park.

The new AI hub will bring together companies, academia, the business community, the public sector, and innovation stakeholders within a shared framework for knowledge development, collaboration, and practical application.

From Data Center to Application

In recent years, Dalarna has become a strategically important location for investments in digital infrastructure. International companies such as Google and EcoDataCenter have established operations in the county, with the latter attracting companies like Mistral AI, Nvidia, and CoreWeave, while demand for AI services and computing power is growing rapidly.

This creates new opportunities, but also raises new questions regarding energy use, the supply of skilled workers, and sustainable development.

“Dalarna has unique strengths thanks to its combination of energy, digital infrastructure, industry, academia, and strong collaboration. Here, we have the opportunity to demonstrate how AI can contribute to both regional and national development in a sustainable way,” says Jörgen Elbe, president of Dalarna University.

Aims to Strengthen Sweden's Competitiveness

The AI hub will serve as a regional hub with national significance. Companies and organizations will gain access to research-based knowledge, methodological support, analytical capabilities, and opportunities to develop AI-related ideas in collaboration with experts and other stakeholders. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Dalarna University and is co-funded by organizations such as Region Dalarna, EcoDataCenter, Falu Energi och Vatten, Borlänge Energi, Nordion Energi, and Fortum. Other organizations contributing to the development include ATEA, Sogeti, Consid, and Nordlo.

The goal is to create long-term structures that make it easier to use AI for innovation, increased productivity, and transformation.

“If Sweden is to succeed in its AI ambitions, the technology needs to become accessible to more companies and organizations. We want to contribute with concrete approaches, experiences, and results that can inspire other parts of the country as well,” says Stefan Rodheim, digitalization coach at Dalarna Science Park.
