Dalarna Science Park's incubator breaks the billion barrier

Since its inception in 2004, Dalarna Science Park's business incubator has coached 169 companies through a three-year incubator program. These 169 companies generated a total turnover in 2022 of SEK 1 billion and created 569 jobs. The companies also contributed SEK 200 million in tax revenue to the Swedish state.

- "We are extremely proud to have been able to contribute to the creation of successful companies since 2004, where long-term sustainability is a priority," says Angelica Ekholm, CEO of Dalarna Science Park. "The fact that these companies also continue to create hundreds of jobs and contribute to both regional and national growth is even more gratifying. "We have a strong business community and a strong entrepreneurial tradition in Dalarna.

During the almost 20 years that the incubator has been in operation, more than 2,800 ideas have been valued and 169 companies have gone through the entire incubator program. The companies that have gone through the incubator so far generated a total turnover of SEK 1 billion in 2022, which also means SEK 200 million in tax revenue for the state. This means that every krona invested in the incubator gives 28 times the money back to the state and region. This shows the importance of both regional and national efforts to capture Dalarna's entrepreneurial power.

- Companies that have gone through our incubator have a survival rate that is more than twice as high compared to companies outside the incubator. This shows that the support from us, together with the support from others in the promotion system, is incredibly important in the start-up phase," says Angelica Ekholm, CEO, Dalarna Science Park. "Our main task, before we admit companies to the incubator, is to evaluate which ideas have the potential to become profitable companies - whether these companies, with the help of our business coaching, have the potential to stand on their own commercial feet. We are proud of how well we have hit the mark so far.

The incubator within Dalarna Science Park currently belongs to the government innovation agency Vinnova's excellence program, from which part of the funding comes. Other funds to support the companies in the incubator come from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (EU) and Region Dalarna. In 2023, 12 new companies were admitted to the incubator while four companies made a successful exit.
